The development of a cavity can cause several serious dental problems, and if it is not addressed and treated in a timely fashion, a cavity could lead to the need for root canal treatment. We encourage you to have a cavity filled as soon as you notice its presence. While you may not realize you have a cavity, there are a few telltale signs that can announce a cavity even in the early stages.

Because it’s not always immediately apparent that a cavity has developed, it’s crucial to visit the dentist every six months or as soon as you notice potential signs of a cavity or any other dental issue. During dental visits, our highly trained team examines your mouth for signs of vulnerable areas that could develop into more serious issues. This enables us to take appropriate action to prevent future dental problems.

One of the earliest signs of a cavity is dental pain, which you may feel constantly or only when biting down. Another indicator is the sudden development of tooth sensitivity or marks on the tooth, such as visible holes or dark brown or black spots.

Fortunately, treatment for a cavity can be very conservative if treated early on. If the decay is contained to the surface of your enamel and has not affected the inner tooth, we may be able to place a simple dental sealant. However, in the case of penetrated enamel, we may need to fill the tooth.

If you are concerned about the possibility of having a cavity or are interested in learning how to prevent a cavity, we invite you to schedule an appointment with Dr. Jason Campbell, our dentists.
