An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure through your gum; in which the very tip of the tooth’s root is removed and sealed. It is often a procedure that is performed after a traditional root canal is not an option anymore or has failed due to re-infection, new decay, narrowing or hardening of canals or trauma. In these cases, it could severely jeopardize your tooth to undergo another root canal, and therefore an apicoectomy may be necessary. After a local anesthetic is applied, a small incision is made in your gum and the infected area near the tip of the root is removed with special techniques and tools. A small filling is then placed over the site to ensure that no other infection enters the area. Sutures will also be placed at the incision site to ensure that it heals properly. In some cases, bone grafting may be necessary if the infection has left gapping to help re-grow bone in the areas where it is lacking. This is an advanced and state of the art procedure that is performed technology, that allows you to save your natural tooth and chew comfortably!
