Taking care of your teeth and gums is a fairly simple process. It means dedicating a few minutes every day to oral health care, and being aware of the foods you eat. This can easily be achieved by anyone who wants a great smile!

First, develop the habit of brushing and flossing your teeth. You should brush for two minutes, 2 times a day. It’s easy to remember–just think “2×2” and you’ll have it down! Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with short, back-and-forth strokes and gentle pressure. When flossing, use ADA approved dental floss and a slow, even sawing motion to prevent cutting gums. Floss once a day! It doesn’t matter whether you floss first or brush first, as long as they both get done.

Second, drink plenty of water. This helps keep your mouth clean by removing food particles and debris, and it is great for your overall body health. Plain or fluoridated water is best. It’s tempting to put a twist of citrus into your water, but try infusing it with other, less acidic fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Prolonged exposure to acid can be damaging to your teeth.

Third, watch the foods you eat. If you choose to eat starchy, sticky, or sugary foods every so often, just be sure to brush and floss extra thoroughly that day. Consider chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after eating, to encourage saliva production. Saliva is your body’s first natural defense against cavities.

Finally, be sure to visit your dentist twice a year; about once every 6 months. If you are in the Prescott, Arizona area, call Pro Solutions Dental Group today at 928-776-1208 to set an appointment! Dr. Jason Campbell will be happy to see you and help you maintain a healthy smile.
